PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

Car Care Aware

Courtesy of the Automotive Service Association

The following simple and inexpensive preventive checks will greatly extend the life of the vehicle, ensure safer operation and even benefit the environment.

Always consult your owner's manual for individual service schedules because maintenance requirements vary by manufacturer.

  • Always consult your owner's manual, but a good rule of thumb is to have the oil filter changed regularly - every 3,000 to 4,000 miles.
  • Have all fluids checked, including brake, power steering, transmission/transaxle, windshield washer solvent and antifreeze. These fluids play a large role in the safety and performance of the vehicle.
  • Check tire inflation. Under-inflated tires can result in a loss of fuel efficiency. This is the least expensive form of preventive and safety maintenance. Tires should be checked once a month.
  • Keep your engine tuned. A fouled spark plug or plugged/restricted fuel injector can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 30 percent.
  • Have the chassis lubricated frequently. This step extends the life of the moving components of the vehicle's suspension system.
  • Check battery cables and posts for corrosion and clean them as needed. The battery fluid also should be checked and filled if it is low, unless it is a maintenance-free battery.
  • Have the lighting system checked frequently, including headlights, turn signals, and brake and taillights.
  • Check windshield washer blades for cracks, tears and windshield contact. Replace them at least once a year, or sooner if streaking begins.
  • Inspect engine belts regularly. Worn belts will affect the engine performance. Look for cracks and missing sections or segments.
  • Have the air filtration system checked frequently. The air filter should be checked every other oil change for clogging or damage. This system ensures that the vehicle is performing at its peak condition.

What Our Customers Are Saying

I have been a customer of Jim's for decades. He is definitely a people person and an honest mechanic. He works with you to get your car running and safe, and explains the process all while not breaking your wallet. Great guy, great service and his staff is awesome too! Definitely take your car or truck to him, you will not be sad you did, just sad if you don't!

-Lady V.

Excellent work and great value from a top team. Along with honesty, integrity and excellence in service, I fully recommend Advanced Automotive and Jim for service on any vehicle.

Jim was very professional from the beginning. I felt so comfortable leaving my car for state inspection. I am new in the area. I will be taking my car for service from now on. I am glad there is a good reliable and honest mechanic shop in Frederick. Thanks!

-Jimmy R.

Had both cars in for the state inspection. Very knowledgeable and detailed in their explanation(s). Jim is old school customer service, which is a great thing!

-Nick T.

We have been using Advanced Automotive Repair for our cars for many years and have always been satisfied with the excellent service and reasonable prices. Jim is skilled and knowledgeable and he doesn't upsell unnecessary repairs. The shop and waiting room are not fancy but that's okay because we appreciate the repair and maintenance costs being kept low.

Great place! Very knowledgeable owner/ mechanic, with more industry certifications than any other mechanic in the area. They offer the full spectrum of automotive repair services, as well as Maryland State Inspections (at one of the lowest prices in the area), they are also a Maryland Certified Emissions Repair Facility. They take the extra steps necessary to do the job the correct way, without taking short cuts. You can feel confident that the work they perform on your vehicle will be done properly, and at the highest standards of quality.

-Karl S.

First time going here. Very honest & open. Plain spoken explanations of what vehicle needs on an inspection and old parts replaced to view. Top notch car care.

-Mike N.

Shari and I got my vehicle inspected at Jim's garage last week and as always we were given the best service and the best advice with the car. Jim takes pride in his work. His number 1 goal is that he provides safety to you when you are on the road. His knowledge on vehicles is like no other mechanic. 2 thumbs up to advanced automobile repair. Thank you Jim .

-Todd W.

My first time being there for my Maryland State Inspection. I received the best customer service and great care for my car. I would recommend this place to everyone! Your needs and best interest are in the forefront of mind. You won't be disappointed.

-Priscille D.

We took our car to Advanced Automotive Repair and dealt with Kim on the phone and Jim in person. They both were a delight to deal with and we felt that we were in good hands immediately. Jim is the type of mechanic that everyone should know and use, he has a "Don't fix it if it isn't broken!" philosophy, much unlike your typical car dealer's service center. This saves you money and time and makes you want to bring your vehicle back to him for service. He explains things and makes sure you understand what he is explaining. He takes the time to make sure that you are happy with what he is going to do and then takes the time to make sure that you are still happy after he is done.
